During the summer, I had the privilege to paint a mural for the G&G Creative Space in Shenzhen. Located in Shenzhen’s Shekou Free Trade Zone, the G&G Creative Community revitalizes the former Nanxing Glass Factory into a dynamic cultural and creative hub. There are flexible spaces for creative work, exhibitions, social events, and lifestyle experiences like art, food, and leisure activities, connecting local and global creatives in a unique industrial setting.
This was my first experience painting professionally in a public setting! My mural, Ignorance, explores themes of curiosity, innocence, and discovery by embracing our ignorance. This piece is dedicated to my future, older self to stay curious and never lose my passion for exploring the world.
The most challenging part of the mural painting process was working around Shenzhen’s rainy and humid weather conditions. Dealing with leakages and a wet wall surface was inconvenient, but the support I received from the community’s security officers and staff members made it much more manageable.
My most valuable takeaway from this experience has been interacting and working with the community members. In addition to painting, I collaborated with the planning committee to organize an upcoming pet-themed event. I was surprised to learn the layers of complexity involved in organizing an event at this scale. Tackling this project made me a lot more aware of the nuanced challenges event managers face. I had so much fun and I am incredibly grateful to the G&G Creative Space for the opportunity to both paint a mural and contribute to the community.
